Please Welcome Dohyung Kim to the CBE Faculty!
The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering welcomes Dr. Dohyung Kim. Dr. Kim joins the School as an Assistant Professor. His goal in research is to facilitate the transition to sustainability by pushing the boundaries of electrochemistry. He believes that there is great potential for advancement by manipulating the structure of solid-liquid interfaces and exploring new electrochemical processes and methods that can harness underutilized resources to produce value-added products. Overall, Dr. Kim’s research aims to deepen our fundamental knowledge of electrochemical reactions and expand their applications in areas of energy, chemicals, materials, and the environment.
Before joining CBE, Dr. Kim was a postdoctoral scholar at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Stanford University studying electrochemical approaches for transforming biomass-derived compounds into chemical products. During his Ph.D. as a Samsung Scholar (2012-2017) at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Kim studied the electrochemica
l reduction of carbon dioxide into valuable products, such as syngas, hydrocarbons, and alcohols. His early works focusing on the fundamental aspects and potential use of nanoparticles as catalysts for CO 2 electroconversion have been the groundwork for the field. Dr. Kim is a recipient of the MRS Graduate Student Award, Kavli Energy Nanoscience Institute Thesis Prize, and Gareth Thomas Materials Excellence Award.
Dr. Kim received his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Seoul National University in 2012 and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2018.
